I know this is an old post but I was wondering if Chanel ever made a box for No. 5 where the think black lines ran horizontally from the smaller side of the box and the name "chanel" in the middle of the two lines also running horizontally parallel to the lines (without cutting off the lines, like in the photo example you gave above)

I have not encountered a bottle with horizontal "pinstripes", as you describe, but it is not impossible. There was a period of time (1939-1946) when Chanel No. 5 was being produced in the United States without the oversight of Mademoiselle Chanel. Also during this time, Chanel No. 5 was sold to markets all over the world, and it is possible that the packaging was varied slightly. This period of uncertainty makes it difficult to determine if the perfume and its packaging are authentic. Let us know if you find any more information!
