The real events for showing off old Hollywood glamour were not the Academy Awards but the movie premieres in the 1930s. It's hard to imagine but almost as many big stars attended those events as the Oscars, and they were more frequent. The public attended too as spectators do now, behind gates and such. Those were the events where stars wore their beaded gowns and dragged their furs on the floor.

Furs dragging along the floor...a horrifying thought to a museum professional! Great point about the way in which the focus has narrowed to the Academy Awards. There are so many films, so many different venues and stars that individual movie premieres don't get much attention.
