Gilbert Adrian probably did more than anybody to popularize dress pajamas when he dressed Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford in them. In 1929 Garbo wore a multi-striped pajama ensemble in the film The Single Standard. In 1930 Adrian designed formal pajamas for the film Our Blushing Brides. These films were seen all over the world and by a bigger audience than read Vogue. In those days the established fashion press was loathe to credit Hollywood costume designers with any kind of fashion influence.

Christian, thanks for this reminder that Hollywood films were a tremendously influential part of 1930s fashion!
